March Release NotesPosted: 03/17/10 06:37 PM
Major push coming soon.  Will include the completely new Photo Manager for Frame Model & Frame Example, as well as some updates to the Frame Model view page.  I may hold off on deploying it till next Monday so that I have another weekend's worth of work to get a few other things done.  Those not in the Bicycle & Frames Beta - the new Photo Manager will also be utilized on other collections once it has been thoroughly tested.

February Release ThreadPosted: 02/10/10 02:38 PM
Today's release didn't change a whole lot that can be seen.

1) A few tweaks to the CSS styles that are used on the Frame Example Add/Edit pages and on the Frame Build display section.
2) Added "Resources" links to the Head Badge, Frame Model and additional link(s) to the Component view pages to improve navigation to the information people are looking for.
3) Tweaked the display of the Additional Resources section of the View Brand page.
4) Implemented a Brand filter on the Frame Detail - Frame Part add/edit page.  Frames Beta Testers can go check that out now.
5) Updated the Add Link page layout.  Added a Admin-only check box which will allow me to hide links from the main list, but have them available as linked to other items on the site (such as brands and soon groups and individual components and such).

Janurary Release NotesPosted: 01/08/10 06:45 PM
Over the last couple days I have released (and made a few tweaks to) the code I had been working on during my surgery last week.  As usual, it has taken a small change or two to get everything working as intended.  At least this time I have the fact I was on high power pain killers as an excuse for the mistakes.  In any case, I think I've got most everything working as intended now.  Highlights of this release:

1) Component Search rewrite.  This includes persistent search across all Component Search types (Visual, Standard (aka: the old "Quick Search") and the new Quick Search (located on the Component List and Component Gallery pages).  The addition of the new Quick Search on the two aforementioned pages which allow you to search on a single Brand and/or Category and/or Component Name.  Both Component List and Component Gallery also show what the list is filtered to above the list, clicking on these items will remove the filter from the search results. (exception to this is Name and other Text filters.  I should have this working shortly)

2) Updates to the Photo Album.  Now has a quick search similar to the Component List, updated how the View Source and View All/Primary toggles work to make them consistent with the options on the Component List and Component Gallery pages.

3) Rename of the old VisaulSearch_List page - now is ListComponentGallery.aspx.  I have added a redirect from the old URL to the new one to automatically redirect users and visitors coming in from old links and bookmarks to the new page.

4) New Theme Image Sets.  Added a couple of the previously "User set only" image sets to be in auto rotation.  Also added a new image set for the British Green and Crimson Red themes.

5) Updates to the Error 404 (Page Not Found) landing page.  Includes links to some of the pages that have been moved in the past which people are still getting old links to.  Should help them find the page they are looking for more than just sending them to the Home page.

6) Admin side addition - added a display of the percentage of photos in the system which have a Source accredited to them.  One of my goals this year is to improve this number as much as possible, not only by the ever increasing number of photos, but also make an effort to reduce the number of photos in the system which do not have a source credit.  The percentage is currently just under 50%, which considering it was only in early 2009 (if memory serves) that I started tracking Source, isn't too bad, but we have over 4000 photos which do not have a source credit and I would like to cut that number in half by year's end.

Apology for the VeloBase.com Release Note EmailingPosted: 11/26/07 02:37 PM

VeloBase.com Members,

It soon became apparent after I posted my last Announcement that there was a minor bug in the new code which selects who to send out the Announcement Email to based on the importance level.  Thus, every member of VeloBase.com was sent the email, instead of only my account.  I apologize for the unexpected broadcast of that information into your inboxes.  I have now resolved this problem, and it should not happen again.

As stated in the Release Notes email that was accidentally sent out to everyone, you can now go into the Edit Profile page on VeloBase.com and adjust the level of Announcements which are emailed to you.  The Default setting for everyone is to only receive the Semi-Monthly Update Announcement which is due to be going out in a few weeks.  All announcements including Release Notes as the one I sent out earlier and the Semi-Monthly updates, can be viewed on the Announcements Page.

Release Notes for 11/26/2007Posted: 11/26/07 01:48 PM

This is probably going to be the last small incrimental release for a few weeks as I am looking at making some more major changes to the website that will take some time to complete.  If there are any smaller changes, they will likely be in the Forum area.

Bug Fixes:
1) Editing a Tool's Brand will now save the new value.
2) When editing a Component and need to change the Brand of a Component, users with the Certified Vintage role can now add new Brands to the list.
3) Fixed the Tools listing Type headers which were cutting off the 's' at the end of the group headers.

User Profile / MyBase changes:
1) Added an option in the Edit Profile page that allows you to change the number of Announcements you are emailed.  Options range from All Announcements, Important Announcements, Semi-Monthly Updates Only to Send No Announcements.  You can always see all Announcements on the VeloBase.com Announcements page, or in the News & Announcements sub forum.
2) Added the count and link of Catalog Scans and Additional Resource Links to the MyBase page under Other Content

General Changes:
1) Added a link to the News & Announcements subforum at the bottom of the Announcements page.  Since only the 10 most recent announcements are viewed there, you can see a listing of all announcements in the sub forum.
2) On the Tools List I have changed the "Type" field to "Years" since the tools are already grouped by Type.
3) Added Recently Added/Updated Brands and Tools to the Recent Content listing.  This is mostly for my use but is interesting to see the newest content on the website.

That should about cover what I've been able to work on today.  If you run into any problems, please contact me through email, or use the Error Report thread in the forum.  Thank you.

Release Notes 11/16Posted: 11/16/07 09:51 AM

Progress on the website rolls on.  Here's an overview of the changes completed this week:

1) View Single Head Badge page added.  I wasn't happy with the current Head Badge Gallery and this is the first part of the Badge Gallery re-write.  You can now see a single head badge the same as you can a Component or a Tool.  You can also add multiple photos to a head badge (up to 4 as in Components and Tools), and add Comments.

2) The VeloBase.com Forum!  It's in what I would consider its Beta form right now.  I'll improve appearance and functionality over the next couple of months, but right now it is functional.  Access the forum through the link at the top of the page.

3) Added a user's title to the Comment side bar under their User Name.  If you haven't set a Custom Title through the User Profile Edit, it will show either 'VeloBase User' or your Role level (User, Vintage User or Certified Vintage).

4) Fixed a bug that prevented the Brand of a Component from being changed.  If a change to the brand is needed, please be sure that the Name field is also updated, thank you!

 5) Removed User's Name (if given in profile) from the User List.  I didn't feel this was really needed in this area.

6) Added a quick "Name Search" to the Quick Search page.  You can now either search just the Name of a component, or use the Quick General Information Search on this page.

7) Added the ability for the Admin to email a user through the website.  This will help me get in contact with you all if I have a question or concern about a component you posted.  I promise to use it sparingly.  No users other than Admins (and I am the only one) have access to this page.

8) Changed the word "Report" to "Delete" on the Report Item link if you are the user who added that item.  This should help clear up the question on how to delete components, head badges, etc that you added but made a mistake on and need to remove.  If you have any other suggestions on how to make this better let me know here.

9) Changed the word "Edit" to "Edit / Delete" on the Edit link on Comments that you have posted.  There is now a check-box on the Edit screen for comments that allows you to Delete that comment.

10) Minor visual changes here and there.  example: Moved the Delete/Report | Edit buttons on the Head Badge Gallery slightly to give a better visual layout.  This page is probably going to under go a major rewrite soon anyways.

11) You can now link directly to the View Single Head badge from the Recent Content, Head Badge Gallery, and User Content pages.

I think that covers the majority of what I have been working on in the past week.  I am going on vacation starting tomorrow morning and will not be back till the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  I will be checking this thread, and email while out of town.  However will not be able to make any changes to the website if there are any bugs hiding in the code anywhere.  I tried to be thorough with testing before releasing these changes so hopefully we won't find any.

VeloBase.com - October UpdatePosted: 10/12/07 03:11 PM
Valued VeloBase.com Members,

Velobase.com is growing by the day, both in members and in components, catalogs, and various other information about Vintage Cycling.  Last night the VeloBase Component Database topped the 500 milestone from over 65 different brands, contributed by our members who have now reached over 150 strong.  I have recently added and updated a large number of Shimano components, as well as adding many of the Campagnolo 50th Anniversary group.  I have recently added fields to track both the Country the component comes from as well as the weight of the component.  VeloBase.com members who's membership has been upgraded to Vintage User or Certified Vintage is welcomed to browse the existing database and add or edit any missing or incorrect information that may be needed.  There are lots of places where there are holes in the information about a component that I'm sure someone out there will know.

There are a number of new features on VeloBase.com since the last update.  The VeloBase.com Visual Component Search allows you to see up to 10 Components per page with photos to quickly browse through the collection looking for a particular component.  This Search type is quickly becoming the most popular way to browse the database.  I have also added Next / Previous buttons on the View Component Detail page to allow you to easily move through the Search Results without going back to the List View.

The Tools & Charts section of the website has also been added to.  The latest versions of my Gear Calculator and Gear Comparer are both up on the website available for use.  I am also working on a Fork Geometry Calculator.  This page also has a listing of Restoration & Wrenching Articles that currently have 3 articles.  I am actively looking for volunteer authors to add additional articles to this section.

More recently I have added the first non-Component centered section of the website.  The Head Badge Gallery currently has 20+ badges and growing.  You can search badges by several different attributes, and we currently have badges representing 10 different countries of origin.  I look forward to seeing what badges the Velobase.com community has to contribute to this new section of the website which will be the first step towards adding frames / bicycles to the site in the future.

Lastly, the most recent major addition to the website is what I am calling the Brand Directory.  Each Brand that is represented on VeloBase.com is categorized by Country on this page.  Looking for the right derailleur to put on that new French bike you just picked up?  This might be a good place to start looking for options.  Click on any Brand to see details about the brand, including the Components broken down by Category or Group.  There is also a place to enter general information about the brand and a place to author an article about the History of the Brand.  I have most of the brands categorized by country at this time, and welcome the velobase.com members to add and edit the general and history information.

VeloBase.com - Mid August UpdatePosted: 08/13/07 09:15 AM
VeloBase.com members,

VeloBase.com is now less than two months old and we have already collected a total of over 300 components in the Component Database, from 57 different brands.  The collection is growing nearly daily, with the latest additions being a number of MAVIC components, as well as new parts from Nisi, Ofmega, 3TTT and Shimano.  I have also posted a number of new early Campagnolo catalogs in PDF form which were emailed to me from a member.

I have been working hard to reduce the number of bugs that are popping up on the website.  Currently I am trying to get to the bottom of a bug which is effecting the 'Standard Search' which is causing it to not return the correct results.  This should hopefully be resolved in the next couple of days.  I have resolved the issue that some of you using the Safari browser on your Mac had been experiencing when trying to add new components.  That fix is now up on the website so you should no longer find yourself staring at a page of technical gibberish after submitting a new component or trying to edit an existing one.  As always, if you do run into an error page, emailing me with details of the error and what you were doing when it came up is very helpful in resolving the problems as quickly as possible.

There is a new page available to all users of 'Vintage User' and above - the Photo Manager.  A much better way of managing the photos for a particular component.  You can reorder the photos, add new ones, and remove photos that do not belong with that particular component.  You can access the Photo Manager page through the link at the top-right of the component page next to the Edit / Add Variation and Watch links.  Any suggestions on how to make this page better is welcomed as always.

I do believe that wraps up the newest changes and updates to the website.  If you have not visited in a while, there has been a lot more added to the website than what I've included above and welcome you to stop by and check it all out.  I plan to send out updates every few months to the membership base to keep everyone informed of the progress on the site.  Till next time.
