Mark Bulgier: "Chains on both sides attached to those big cam-like things (I'll just call them the cams though I don't know if that term is technically correct) The cams freewheel on the inner hub shell, so the hub keep rotating forward while the cams reciprocate, moving forward under power then freewheeling back to the starting position. The levers with the pedals don't go in a circle, you just push down then the pedal comes back up. Each pedal powers one side of the hub. Attaching the chain to different heights on the lever in front gave different "gear ratios" "
