By the 1980s SR Apex Cranksets covered a variety of levels, from gorgeous drillium styled Superlight AX-5 with a weight of 565 and AX-5 without the drilling with a weight of 590g through to the rather pedestrian AX-3FA which had an outer chainring that could not be removed but still managed a respectable 610g. The 5 series, however, remains the most interesting with the cranks being forged in 14s Super Duralumin and swaged on to the spider. To confuse issues SR Decided to make these cranks compatible to Shimano Dura Ace or Campy, with differing Crank Tapers to match and possibly differing BCD measurements. To further confuse things, the model type was not stamped on the crank arms - so compatibility will be a matter of trial and error. Suffice it to say if you have a set of the lovely cranks date stamped for the 80's and the outer chain ring is removable then you have a 5 series. If the outer ring is not bolted on you have the 3 series. 

The finish is not quite as good as the Royal 5 line with slightly cloudy anodizing and polishing not to the same standard. The Apex Cranks were produced in the same material and with only a few grams of weight difference with the Royal. For example the Royal 5 Extra Super Light weighs in at 545g while the Royal 5 Super light weighs 595g - five grams heavier than the Apex AX-5. 

A light Alloy chain-guard was available for all models on request and two sizes were available 170/165.

Date of Manufacturing / Production Code for SR seatposts (at least for the 80's):
The date of prodcution of SR (Laprade) seatposts is shown around the min.insert line as follows:
"letter"-"double digit number", e.g. F-81 oder L-81, while the letter should be the month and the number will be the year of production.
So F-81 seems to be June 1981 while L-81 would indicate December 1981.
(in-line with the code 1 examples on vintage-trek.com...)
