Stronglight introduced the 104 model crankset in 1980 as an eventual replacement for the venerable 49 model cranks. The 104 cranks were aimed at the mid-range OEM bicycle market to compete against the Japanese suppliers. The crank arms appear to be pressure cast as in the Japanese euphemism "melt forged".

Peugeot had 104 cranksets private labeled with their name and lion logo. They also had Simplex produce derailleurs with the Peugeot name, the same with Maillard hubs. The first version Peugeot 104's were as pictured. By 1982 Peugeot was providing 104 cranks with drilled chainrings which were the equivalent of the Stronglight 104 bis. The Peugeot 104 cranks had 52-42T chainrings with 170mm crank arms. The cosmetic finish of the 104 chainrings was not the same as those provided on the top of the line Stronglight cranks: 105, 105 bis and so on.
