General Information
The 801 was made in the 70's and early 80's, however by that time was a bit outdated as it didn’t have Suntour’s sloping parallelogram which was vastly superior. It does have hollow titanium bolts and pivots, and a very light aluminium cage and parallelogram. It is also completely dismantleable.  The 801 was produced at least through the 84 model year as shown in the 83/84 Mavic Catalog as one of their two derailleurs.  The 851 was the higher end version of the 801 during this time period and can be recognized from the 801 by having a white pin stripe around the edge of the jockey cage.
The 801/851 was replaced in the early 90's by the 840 (double) / 841 (triple), which had a more up-to-date geometry (sloping parallelogram).

Brand Information(click to expand)
Mavic is best known for its lightweight aluminum rims and complete wheels, which they continue to produce today.  They also produced a full range of drive train components in the past.  Mavic made a failed attempt to popularize an electronic shifting system in the early 90's.
