ARIS is not a brand, but a registered acronym for Advanced Rider Index System, the indexing system developed by Sachs-Huret during the late 80s. Products made by Sachs-Huret but marketed under third-part labels (like Edco) were also labeled as ARIS compatible. Label aggregation and variation ("Sachs-Huret ARIS" derailleurs, "Edco ARIS" derailleurs, "Sachs ARIS" freewheels) obscured this fact, as did the analog and far more successful SIS, by Shimano.
