The VeloBase History of Kondor
Kondor was founded by Konrad Kotter. He marketed italian-made frames (from Romani and Pistrada) and completed them in germany. The brand declared bankrupcy in 1982. After that Kotter founded "Albuch-Kotter" in 1993. At the end of the seventies, there was no German professional team existing. Konrad Kotter - a former opera singer, sewing machine industrialist and restaurateur – and great bike enthusiast, founded in 1979 the "KONDOR Bicycles" team. At the beginning a few German and a few foreign professionals were sent to the international races. In 1980, the racing team grew to almost twice as many riders and the first respectable successes were achieved but the big victory in an important Race or even a “monument“ didn´t happen, so the Kondor team was closed in the End of 1980. In 1981 Kotter again invested a lot of money, when founding Kotter's Racing Team, his goal was to form a team around Dietrich Thurau (who wore the yellow jersey of the 1979 TdF for 15 days and finished 5th) that would compete in the 1983 Tour de France. However, he experienced some disappointments (with Thurau in particular, whose contract was terminated prematurely). In 1982, the team competed in all of cycling's monuments except for Milan-San Remo, but by the end of the year Kotter disbanded the team due to a lack of success - the Kondor factory was closed for bankrupcy, and taken over by „Albuch Bycicle Factory“.
